American Solutions for Business has always been a family-oriented company with many family teams consisting of parents, children, spouses and siblings. We celebrate every sales team because we know the strength that comes with these dynamics. Families work as a unit and share valuable knowledge to take care of our customers.
Austin & Jeremy Horn are a father/son team located in Utah who specialize in print and promotional products. Austin has been with American for over 20 years, and brought Jeremy on board 4 years ago. Austin’s wife and Jeremy’s mother, Carla, was once also very involved in the business. The Horns have a happy and prosperous history with American and continue to be leaders in the field today.
Why you love working with your family:
Austin – We work as a team for the betterment of each other and the family in general.
Jeremy – Work typically takes people away for the majority of the day from family. Working for American, we get to spend the day working with those most important to us.
What are some challenges (and how have you overcome them)?
Austin – Our challenges have been loss of accounts due to technology, personnel changes, attrition and other causes. We overcome this by sourcing new leads that often turn into new customers.
Jeremy – Some of the challenges have been taking a tried and tested business model that has been used for many years and adapting it to utilize new systems and technologies. Being willing and able to adapt as the market changes have not been challenge-free, but it has been well worth it. My dad brings many years of sales experience and I’ve helped enhance this with updated processes and technologies. For example, many years ago, we phased out hand-written purchase orders, and now we are able to process orders much quicker and have a searchable database through American’s order management system.
What is your fondest memory working with your family?
Austin – One of our fondest memories is attending our summer conference at Craguns as a family.
Jeremy – The great and fun times are always wonderful to remember and look back on…the summer bike rides at Craguns, the evening beach party or closing a great account together, bringing in a big order. But perhaps the most meaningful memories come from looking at the tough and difficult times, the struggles that have been overcome. Looking back and remembering how banding together and working those challenges were overcome.
Why should others consider working with their family?
Austin – I love that we support one another in all aspects of life.
Jeremy – It has been said to “never mix family and business”. Although that may be true for some, there are great benefits from working with family. Perhaps no one knows you better than your family, and they can lift you up and help you be the best you can be. Working with family can help you keep in perspective what is most important in life.
